Figure out what to do for a job
Corporate jobs aren't cutting it anymore. I stopped buying into losing 8 hours to work just as a necessary evil. I've worked with computers too long.
I'm currently web-programming, and it's cool and al., but... It ain't making "a difference" y'know? I sit in meetings just thinking about how meaningless it all is, all this talk about groups and 'the company' and procedures and blah blah blah...Like it's important or something.
So I gota find a new field. Unfortunately, I didn't do myself any favors when picking interests to be into... Science, theory, philosophy, martial arts and meditation... None too much of a thing that leads to cash income, really. Author or lecturer, and I don't think I really take myself seriously enough to come off well with either.
So school is in my future, unless I come up with some sorta super-nifty thingamajig niche thing type of...thing? Yeah, didn't think so.
I keep thinking of "healing" type arts...but do i really buy into that stuff? Could I really market myself out in an environment that's already getting saturated? Bah, who knows... gotta figure out something, though! It's got the soul-wearing goin' on.
I hear you. My buddy and I were going through a list of people we know who are at a certain level of development (in Spiral Dynamics terms “green” or “yellow” or higher…) and what they did for work.
Most are techies (but hate their jobs), massage therapists, psychotherapists, coaches, healers, own their own business, work in for a health food company, work for a non-profit or spiritual center, are trust funders, or teach in academia.
Nobody at this level of development that we know of works for a typical corporation–or at least not for very long.
Personally I’m a techie (web designer) that works for a non-profit (Integral Institute) who’s working towards becoming a full time Life Coach.
I think it can give you perspective to realize that you are not the only one desperately searching for fulfilling work. Your problem is actually typical of people who are into Alan Watts, RAW, zen, etc. When I was first struggling with this it felt like I was sooo different from everybody else who was satisfied with their jobs, so I watched Office Space every night for months. :) But now I’ve seen this so many times it’s just an obvious pattern to me.
Can you compete in a saturated market? Of course. You just get really really good at what you do, find a niche, and/or move to a less progressive town where you are the ONLY out there healer type. Or work for a non-profit, or any of the things I listed above.
